Dandenong Information
Dandenong is a sprawling city with a population of over 125,000 and located on Dandenong Creek in the foothills of Mount Dandenong.
Being so close to the State Capital it is easy to think of the city as an appendage of the Melbourne Metropolitan area. From its humble beginnings as a market town for a large regional farming community, it has grown into a major Manufacturing and Commercial centre in its own right.
The large mix of multicultural society in the city is evident with the enormous mix of festivals and restaurants in the area. The city’s CBD which is going through major redevelopment is one of the largest activity centres outside central Melbourne. With Shops, Café Bars, Entertainment Centres, Pubs and a healthy nightlife, there is always something to do or see for the discerning traveller.
One of the must see sights is the redevelopment of the old Town Hall into the Drum Theatre, a mix of old and new architecture with its striking red drum shaped building clearly visible from the CBD.
For the outdoor lovers there is Churchill National Park just north east of the city, an area that represents the Bushland and Forests that covered the region many years ago. Walk through the giant timbers of the beautiful Red Gum or visit some of the abandoned quarry sites that are spread throughout the region. The park is amassed with local wildlife including Thornbills, Bellbirds, Kangaroos, Wallabies and the very shy Echidnas.
Just to the east of the park is Lysterfield Lake Park, built around the Lysterfield reservoir that supplied water to the Mornington Peninsula for many years. Now it is a tourist hotspot for Swimming, Picnicking and Recreation. Although power boats are restricted due to the safety of swimmers, Sailing, Canoeing and Rowing are permitted in certain areas.
