Wynyard Information
Wynyard in Tasmania is a medium sized town with about 5,000 people. The township lies on the Bass Highway at the mouth of the Inglis River. Wynyard is an ever increasingly tourist destination and many visitors come to see the Table Cape.
Table Cape is a former volcano, which provide spectacular views. The Table Cape lighthouse is set on the sheer cliff edge and is surrounded by farmland. The Lighthouse was built in 1888 and was the site of an unfortunate death of the light keepers son Berti just three weeks after it opened.
Wynyard is home to the Wynyard Tulip Festival known as “Bloomin”. The festival is a popular event and one of the town’s greatest attractions not to miss. The tulip farms in the area provide spectacular scenery any flower lover will enjoy.
Another great place to visit in Wynyard is the local visitor centre, which houses a collection of vintage Ford cars. The collection named “Wonders of Wynyard” makes very interesting history and is well worth seeing.
Golfing enthusiasts will enjoy the Wynyard Golf Club with its breathtaking surroundings. The Golf club has some of the best views found in Wynyard and is great value for money. It is located on Golf Links Road just a short two minutes from town.
When staying in Wynyard a great little exploration trip is to visit the Oldina Picnic Area located 10kms southwest on C235 road. The area is the ideal location for a picnic or barbeque and has plenty of open spaces for children to play at. You will also be amazed with the tall timber and the fresh smell of pine.
Fossil Bluff in Wynyard is another hot spot. The sandstone bluff has layers of fossil encased on the stone. The Bluff was created 38 million years ago and lies on the top of the tillite.
