Beaconsfield in Tasmania is located on the Tamar River with a population of about 1,500 people. The area of Beaconsfield was first discovered by William Paterson on his expedition to Port Dalrymple and was named Beaconsfield in honour of Benjamin Disraeli the 1st Earl of Beaconsfield in the UK.
The township has always predominantly been a mining town since gold was first discovered in 1847. For an insight into the history of mining visit the Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre. The heritage centre highlights how Beaconsfield was once the richest gold towns in Australia and the famous events such as the 2006 Mine collapse when an earthquake caused a rock fall and miners were trapped in a shaft.
