Charleville Information
Charleville, Queensland is another small but interesting town in Queensland. With a population of about 3,500 people it makes the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the overpopulated cities.
In town you will find an interesting historical museum for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. Australia being so vast has relied on the Royal Flying Doctor Service for medical outback help. Although the service is Australia wide it is in Charleville you will find the home of the museum.
Slim Dusty was one of Australia’s greatest country music singers. In one of his songs titled “Charleville” he refers to the wildlife sanctuary located here called the Bilby Reserve.
Astronomy enthusiasts will enjoy the Cosmos theatre in Charleville. This observatory was built in Charleville as the lack of pollution and industrial light provides the perfect clear night sky for stargazing. It is fascinating to use the Meade telescopes and Charleville provides the best view in the county of the Milky Way. There is even an Asteroid 13933 called “Charleville” after the discovery from the observatory.
Another fantastic feature of Charleville is the Historic House and Museum located in Alfred Street. It started in 1881 as the Queensland National Bank, became a private residence, then a boarding house and was purchased by the Charleville council in 1973 and turned into a museum. This is the oldest building in town still on the original building site.
The famous Vortex Gun Display is another history gem on display in Charleville. In 1902 a man named Clement Lindley Wragge tried to fire cannons into the clouds in order to break a drought in Charleville. Unfortunately as you would expect he was unsuccessful.
