Leonora Information
Leonora with a population of about 1,500 people is the centre for mining and exploration as well as pastoral areas in the northern Goldfields.
Travellers who enjoy hot climate will love experiencing Leonora. The town is very hot in summer and rainfall is very minimal so take plenty of water.
There is an abundance of wildlife in particular Emus, Kangaroos and Wedge tailed eagles. In July to September you will also experience magnificent wildflowers for a great eco experience.
One of Australia’s finest museums is located here in the Gwalia Historical precinct. The museum features cultural heritage from many different countries that have lived in town over the years.
The Sons of Gwalia mine has always experienced a turbulent life opening up and shutting down many times over the years. In doing so there are old buildings to see as well as old mining equipment, woodline trains mail and Chevrolet trucks, and even the original horse drawn hearse of Leonora.
If you ever wondered what it was like to live in the rugged outback of Australia over the last hundred years, Leonora will give you a great insight.
The pastoral industry can be seen in the area. Once it was actually quite big when the first miners arrived, however today it is relatively moderate due to trucks transporting goods into town.
While you drive with your air conditioned van or car rental exploring the region listening to music, spare a thought for the great explorers who often experienced loneliness and hardship out here many years ago.
With lots of good accomodation, places to eat and the fantasic attraction of a truely outback Australian town you will be sure to be satisfied visiting Leonora.
